Sea and season: the rule that matters

From November to April most west-coast beaches suit swimming. From May to October several guides report regular red flags and rip currents; Karon is named the riskiest, with Kata, Surin and Nai Harn close behind. Red means do not swim. Lifeguards usually patrol in daytime, and calm-looking water guarantees nothing. For Mai Khao sources differ: patrolled according to one, no lifeguards along most of the beach according to another; swim only near a lifeguard post. See also Phuket weather and disruptions.

By profile

Families with children. Kata and Kamala combine restaurants on foot, toilets and lifeguards; Nai Yang suits little ones in its sheltered part. For hotels with kids' clubs: Phuket with family.

Couples and quiet. Layan, Naithon and Laem Singh (reached by boat or path, check on site, see its page) escape the crowds. We state each one's limits: few restaurants, a taxi is a must.

Sunset. All face west: Kamala, Nai Harn and Karon are cited most; see the best sunset spots.

No car. Sleeping in Kata or Karon puts the beach on foot; read where to stay in Kata.

Our pick by trip

  • First time, seven days: Kata (sleep and beach in one place).
  • Quiet above all: Layan or Naithon, with Grab for dinner.
  • Party: Patong, but sleep in Kata for peace; see Patong.
