Patong Beach: swimming, water sports and tips

Updated on October 19, 2026

Patong Beach is Phuket's biggest and busiest beach: a long arc of sand in front of the town, lined with coconut palms, cafés, restaurants and rows of loungers with parasols. By day people swim, have a massage and watch the boats; you can also try parasailing, jet-skiing and banana boats. In the evening the beach lights up and joins in the town's atmosphere. It is very convenient (toilets, showers, food, equipment hire) but crowded, noisy in high season and above all dangerous in the rainy season: from May to October strong currents cause drownings. Red flags then ban swimming and lifeguards watch the beach; never ignore them.

Highlights

The beach sign

The beach sign

The big colourful "Patong Beach" letters are one of the town's photo meeting points, facing the sea. The sign stands near the main access to the beach.

The bay and the rocks

The bay and the rocks

At the ends of the beach, rocks and clearer water offer quieter corners than the middle of the beach, with a view of the hills around the bay.

Water sports

Parasailing, jet skis and boats are offered on the beach. Compare prices, check the equipment and the insurance, and read our scams and safety in Phuket guide before renting a jet ski.

Loungers and food

Loungers with a parasol can be rented on the spot, at a price to agree before you sit down; the seafront cafés and restaurants let you have lunch with your feet in the sand.

The beach at night

After sunset you can stroll along the seafront before heading to Bangla Road or a seafood restaurant.

Tips

  • Always check the flag colour before going into the water: red = swimming banned, and this is common in the rainy season, even when the sea looks calm. Do not swim alone in the evening or after drinking alcohol. Photograph the jet ski before renting it, and never leave your passport as a deposit. If you want a quieter beach, see Kata or Kamala, or, for a hidden beach, Freedom Beach.

How to get there

The beach is in the heart of Patong, on Phuket's west coast, about 40 minutes by road from Phuket Town. It is within walking distance of most Patong hotels; otherwise take a taxi, ride-hailing or tuk-tuk (agree the price before getting in). See getting around Phuket.

Opening hours

Best: November to April
Monday-Sunday, free access; lifeguards on duty during the day (check the flags)
