Jet skis and "damage"
This is Patong's best-documented trap: the operator claims the jet ski is scratched or damaged on return and demands a large sum, sometimes under pressure. Guides mention amounts of up to several tens of thousands of baht. The simplest thing is not to rent one. If you do: film and photograph the whole machine before leaving, with the operator in the frame, read the contract, check the insurance and never leave your passport as a deposit. In a dispute, call the tourist police, 1155 according to an expat guide (to be verified).
Tuk-tuks and taxis
Phuket's tuk-tuks have no meter: the price is negotiated. In Patong, cases of drivers doubling the agreed fare, then threatening, have been reported in the press. Agree the price before getting in, ask for it in baht, and pay the price quoted. Ride-hailing apps and the official airport taxis are more predictable. The sea: red flags and currents
From May to October, strong currents cause rescues and drownings on the west coast beaches, notably Patong. A red flag means swimming is banned: this applies even in fine weather. Do not swim alone, after drinking or at night. If a current carries you off, do not fight it; swim parallel to the beach and call for help. See the Patong Beach page.
Boat trips
Compare several agencies, check the life jackets, the number of passengers and the insurance, and avoid paying everything in advance to a street tout. For the islands, see Phi Phi.
Nightlife

What to do if there is a problem
Keep a copy of your passport, note the tourist police number and your embassy's, and file a complaint at Patong police station in case of assault or theft. Contact your travel insurance before any major repair.
