Layan Beach in Phuket: swimming, access, hotels and sunset (2026)

Updated on October 30, 2026

Layan Beach is a quiet beach on Phuket's northwest coast, at the northern end of Bang Tao, about 13-14 km from the airport and 25 km from Phuket Town. Access is free, there are almost no restaurants on the sand and the feel is residential. Swimming is pleasant from November to April; during the monsoon (May to October) rip currents can form, especially toward the ends. Details read on 29 October 2026 in guides and hotel sites.

Highlights

The wide bay

The wide bay

A curved, lightly visited beach, calmer than the Surin end of Bang Tao. A river closes the beach to the north, with small fishing boats and an island offshore.

Sunset

Sunset

The beach faces west. One guide points to the terrace bars of the hotels (The Pavilions, Kora Beach Resort) for watching it; on the sand, bring something to sit on.

The beachfront hotels

Anantara Layan Phuket (on the beach, several restaurants and bars), Kora Beach Resort (beachfront, 307 rooms according to one guide) and The Pavilions Phuket on the hill. The Laguna resorts are just to the south.

Practical info

Tips

  • Almost no shops on the beach: a local guide reported just one simple restaurant open, at the river end, so bring water and snacks. The access road is narrow and poorly signed: follow the "Banyan Tree" signs from Bang Tao, then turn right at the next junction. No organised car park is described; a Grab or the hotel shuttle is simplest. A drowning in the monsoon surf was reported in 2018: respect red flags. For more life, see Bang Tao or Surin; to stay in the area, read where to stay in Bang Tao and the north. Details come from travel guides, not an official beach site.

How to get there

Northwest coast, about 13-14 km from Phuket airport (15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic, estimate). Taxi or Grab to "Layan Beach", or hotel shuttle. See getting around Phuket and from the airport to the beaches.
