Bang Tao Beach: one of the longest beaches in Phuket

Updated on October 19, 2026

Bang Tao Beach is a long ribbon of sand on Phuket's west coast, north of Surin, often described as one of the longest on the island, about 6 to 8 km depending on the source. It is lined with casuarinas, resorts, beach clubs and restaurants, and it feels airier than the southern beaches. The water is lovely in the dry season and the swell is sometimes strong during the monsoon.

Highlights

Sunbeds and palm trees

Sunbeds and palm trees

The sand is pale and the seabed slopes gently; the beach clubs offer sunbeds, drinks and meals. The south of the beach, towards Surin, is the liveliest; the north is calmer and more residential.

The sunset

The sunset

The beach faces west; in the late afternoon, people settle at the water's edge to watch the sun go down. Jet skis and boats sometimes pass close to the shore: see our tips on scams and safety in Phuket, especially for rentals.

The Laguna area

The beach adjoins the Laguna Phuket complex, its hotels and its golf course. See the Bang Tao and Laguna page.

Practical info

Tips

  • The beach is long: choose your access according to the restaurant or hotel you are heading to. The sand is white and hot at noon: bring sandals. Watch the flags: in the monsoon, currents are strong. For a shorter, smarter beach, see Surin; for a simpler village, Kamala. The information on this page comes from travel guides and public sources, not from an official website of the beach.

How to get there

Bang Tao is about 30 minutes by road from Phuket airport depending on traffic (see from the airport to the beaches). Taxi, ride-hailing, hotel shuttle or scooter; see getting around Phuket.

Opening hours

Best: Morning and late afternoon
Beach open access all year; sunbeds, restaurants and beach clubs generally open from morning to evening
