Taking a lesson
To start, a 1-hour group lesson at Kata or Karon with a soft board is simplest. A Karon school offers a 1-hour lesson in the water after 15 to 20 minutes of theory on the beach, with equipment, for about US$35 (4.6/5 from about 73 reviews), and a pick-up from Kata and Karon. An artificial wave in Patong also lets you practise in any weather.
Safety
The monsoon is dangerous: rip currents and red flags, especially at Surin and Nai Harn. Do not surf alone and follow the lifeguards. See Phuket in June and Kata beach, Surin.
