Kata Beach (Kata Yai) is one of the most popular beaches in southwest Phuket. The sand is fine, casuarina trees line the edge, and the village just behind has restaurants, shops and equipment rentals within walking distance of the sea. It suits families and travellers who want a seaside-village feel, calmer than Patong. It is good for swimming in the dry season and for beginner surfing during the monsoon.
Highlights

Kata Yai bay
A big crescent beach, with sunbeds and parasols for hire on part of the sand; one traveller review mentions about 100 baht a day for a sunbed, a price to check on the spot.

The sunset
The beach faces west: in the late afternoon the light on the sea draws walkers and photographers.
Kata Noi and surfing
To the south, Kata Noi is smaller and quieter. During the monsoon, Kata's waves attract surfers, and several schools offer lessons.

Tips
- Swim only in patrolled areas and respect the flags: a red flag means do not enter the water. In the rainy season, rip currents are frequent. Rent a scooter with care on the very hilly road from Kata to Karon. For the neighbouring beach, see Karon Beach; for context, the Kata and Karon guide. The information on this page comes from travel guides and public sources, not an official beach website.
How to get there
Kata is about an hour by car from the airport, depending on traffic. Take a taxi or Grab from the airport, Phuket Town or Patong, or a shared pick-up bus (songthaew) from Phuket Town. For fares, see from the airport to the beaches.
