Kamala Beach is a long crescent of sand on Phuket's west coast, about 3 km long, calmer than the beaches of Patong or Karon. It faces west, which makes it a good place for sunset, and it is lined with beach restaurants, sunbeds for hire and small hotels. It is generally popular with families, couples and long-stay travellers. Like all west-coast beaches, the sea is lovely in the dry season and rough during the monsoon.
Highlights

The big arc of sand
The sand is pale and the beach wide at low tide. The north end is a little quieter and the south closer to the restaurants; choose according to the mood you want. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented on site: agree the price before settling in.

The sunset
The sun sets straight into the sea. In the late afternoon, settle into a beach restaurant or on the sand with a drink; it is the highlight of the day here.
Swimming and the flags
The sea is pleasant from November to April. During the monsoon, rip currents can be dangerous: respect the red flags and do not swim if the swell is strong. See also our article on scams and safety in Phuket.
Practical info
Tips
- Bring sunscreen and water; shade is limited on the sand in the middle of the day. Street vendors and masseuses pass regularly: a polite "no thank you" is enough. For a full village around the beach, see the Kamala page; for a smarter beach to the north, Surin beach. The information on this page comes from travel guides and public sources, not from an official website of the beach.
How to get there
The beach is in the village of Kamala, about 8 km from Patong and 45 minutes by road from the airport. Taxi, ride-hailing, tuk-tuk or scooter; see getting around Phuket. The seafront restaurants are a few steps from the sand.
