Kata and Karon: family-friendly beaches in southwest Phuket

Updated on October 19, 2026

Kata and Karon are two neighbouring beach resorts on Phuket's west coast, between Patong to the north and Cape Phromthep to the south. They are a calmer, more family-oriented alternative to Patong: long sandy beaches, roadside restaurants and shops, hotels in every price range and a modest nightlife. Kata has two bays, Kata Yai (the large one) and Kata Noi (the small one, further south), while Karon, further north, is the longest of the three beaches. A viewpoint above the road looks over all of them.

Kata Yai is the busiest, with restaurants, sunbed rentals and surf lessons; Kata Noi, smaller, is quieter. See Kata Beach.

Karon's long beach

Karon is the largest of the three, with more room and fewer people than Patong. See Karon Beach. Further south, Cape Phromthep and Nai Harn Beach are easy to add on the same day.

Practical info

Tips

  • Respect the red flags, especially during the monsoon: lifeguards put them up where currents are dangerous, and drownings were reported at Karon and Kata despite the flags in June and September 2025. To choose between the two beaches, read our Kata and Karon guide; to compare with the island's biggest resort, see Patong. The information on this page comes from travel guides and public sources, not an official website.

How to get there

Kata and Karon are in the southwest of the island, about an hour by car from the airport depending on traffic. The easiest option is a taxi or ride-hailing app (Grab) from the airport, Phuket Town or Patong, agreeing the price before you get in. Local shared pick-up buses (songthaews) link Phuket Town to these beaches. For prices and options, see getting around Phuket.

Opening hours

Best: November to April
The area and beaches are open access at all hours; lifeguards patrol during the day.
