Kata, Karon, Kata Noi, Nai Harn: the choice in brief

Kata Beach

Beach Atmosphere Best for
Kata Seaside village, restaurants and shops on foot, surf waves in the monsoon Families, couples, first stay
Kata Noi Smaller, calmer, south of Kata Those who want quiet
Karon Very long white-sand beach, more space Walkers, beachfront hotels
Nai Harn Secluded bay in the south, local feel Travellers with a car or scooter

Where to stay

The choice is first between Kata village, where you can do everything on foot, and Karon, where things are more spread out along the road and the beach. Hotels range from budget to luxury resorts. To compare with the whole coast, see where to stay in Phuket; for a livelier atmosphere, Patong is a short distance from Karon. Book early between December and February, when prices rise.

When to swim: dry season and monsoon

From about November to April the sea is calm and swimming is easy. During the monsoon (May to October) waves are strong and red flags are frequent. The authorities reminded visitors in June 2025 that drownings had occurred at Karon and Kata despite red flags; in September 2025 a man went missing at Karon despite the same warning. The rule is simple: red flag, no swimming. More advice in scams and safety in Phuket. Beginner surfing is possible at Kata in the monsoon, with an instructor.

Seeing the three beaches from above

Kata Beach, west coast of Phuket

To understand the coast before choosing, stop at the Karon viewpoint, which overlooks Kata Noi, Kata and Karon. Continue south to Cape Phromthep, the island's most famous sunset: arrive an hour early, as the car park fills up.

Getting around

Most travellers take a taxi or Grab from the airport, about an hour's drive depending on traffic. On the spot, shared pick-up buses (songthaews) link Kata, Karon and Phuket Town, and scooters are common but risky on the hilly roads. For fares and options, see from the airport to the beaches and getting around Phuket.

A typical day

Morning: swim at Kata or Karon, before the heat. Midday: lunch in the village. Afternoon: Karon viewpoint, then Cape Phromthep or Nai Harn for the sunset. Evening: dinner in Kata. For a longer stay, see Phuket in 3 days.
