Rawai and Chalong: south Phuket, harbour, seafood and boat departures
Rawai and Chalong are the two areas at the southern tip of Phuket. Chalong has the big pier from which most boat excursions leave, as well as the island's largest temple, Wat Chalong. Rawai is a fishing village with a beach of longtail boats, a fish market and seafood restaurants. It is not the area for big swimming beaches, but it is useful for excursions, for eating and for staying away from the crowds.
Highlights

Rawai beach
Longtail boats are moored in front of the sand, and the sea serves mainly as a harbour. Swimming is less pleasant than on the west-coast beaches; people come for the atmosphere, the boats and the restaurants.

Chalong bay and pier
Chalong is the main departure point for boat excursions to Coral, Racha and, depending on the offer, the Phi Phi islands. Departure times depend on the operator: read your booking voucher.
The fish market and restaurants
In Rawai you can choose fresh seafood from the vendors and have it cooked in the neighbouring restaurants, a popular arrangement. Ask the price per kilo and the cooking charge before ordering, and check the bill.
The viewpoints
Cape Promthep, Nai Harn beach and the Big Buddha are close by.

Tips
- Rawai suits those who want a quiet stay, or who go on excursions often. For swimming, Nai Harn and Kata are more pleasant. There is no regular public transport at the southern tip; compare taxi, ride-hailing and scooter in our article getting around Phuket. Compare with other areas in where to stay in Phuket. The information on this page comes from travel guides and public sources, not from an official website of the area.
How to get there
Rawai is about 45 minutes to 1 hour by road from the airport (see from the airport to the beaches) and about half an hour from Phuket Town, depending on traffic. Taxi, ride-hailing or scooter; excursion operators often offer a transfer to Chalong.
