Big Buddha Phuket: opening hours, how to get there and what to wear
Phuket's Big Buddha is a seated Buddha statue about 45 metres tall, standing on top of Nakkerd Hill between Chalong and Kata. It is visible from much of the south of the island, and the site has one of the best views on Phuket: Chalong Bay on one side, Kata and Karon on the other. Entry is free and it is still a place of worship, which matters for what you wear. Allow about an hour on site, plus the drive.
Highlights

The statue
The Buddha is clad in white Burmese marble, which makes it visible from far away. A platform and a small shrine around the base let you get close; much of the construction was paid for by donations, and the site is still being developed.

The 360° view
This is the real reason to go up. On a clear day you can see Chalong Bay, the nearby islands, Kata and Karon. Go in the morning, before the heat haze builds.
Bells and offerings
Bells and donation plaques surround the site: anyone can make an offering, with no obligation. Souvenir stalls and small cafés sit near the entrance.
Practical info
Tips
- This is a sacred site: cover your shoulders and knees, men included. Sarongs are lent at the entrance, but it is better to arrive dressed for it. A landslide closed the site for a while in 2026; according to a local guide it reopened on 3 March 2026, so check its status before you go up. Opening hours vary between sources (see below). The road is steep and narrow: be careful on a scooter, especially in the rain. Combine the visit with Wat Chalong, 15 minutes away, and with Promthep Cape for sunset. This information comes from travel guides and public sources, not an official site.
How to get there
The site is on top of Nakkerd Hill, reached by a road that starts from Chao Fa West Road in Chalong. From Patong or Kata, take a taxi, a Grab or a tuk-tuk (agree on the price before getting in, return included), or rent a scooter if you are comfortable on steep roads. There is parking near the upper entrance; day tours often include the hotel transfer. Taxis and tuk-tuks wait at the top for the way down. For getting around, read the Phuket transport guide.
