Which area to choose

To compare well-rated places to sleep, see where to stay in Phuket or search Booking.com Phuket directly. Choose a room near a busy street, with a reception open at night.

Evenings and nights

Stay on lit, busy streets, do not walk alone on empty beaches after dark, and order a Grab instead of getting into a stranger's vehicle. In bars, never leave your glass unattended and do not accept a drink from a stranger: guides report cases of spiked drinks and inflated bills in Patong. The most common tricks are listed in scams and safety in Phuket.

Scooters and getting around

Scooters cause the most traveller injuries: wear a helmet, hold a licence valid for the category and check the insurance before signing (the renter's cover is often thin). If you are not confident, Grab, metered taxis and private transfers are enough; compare options in scooter or car in Phuket.

Sea and health

A red flag means no swimming, especially from May to October. Do not swim alone on a beach with no lifeguard. For hospitals and pharmacies, see health in Phuket.

Useful numbers

Tourist police: 1155 (English-speaking). Ambulance: 1669. Keep your hotel's card with you and share your location with someone at home.
