Khao Rang (Monkey Hill) in Phuket: viewpoint, monkeys, opening hours and how to get there (2026)
Khao Rang, which many travellers call "Monkey Hill", is the viewpoint of Phuket Town: a wooded hill with views over the town, Chalong Bay and, on a clear day, the islands. Entry is free. A paved road climbs to the top, so this is a 30 to 60 minute stop by car, Grab or scooter, not a hike. Opening hours differ by source (6 am to 8 pm in one, 24 hours in another); the best time is late afternoon, for the light and the sunset.
Highlights

The city panorama
From the terraces at the top you see Phuket Town and its rooftops, and you can pick out the big stupa of Wat Chalong. The air is clearer in the morning; in the wet season, haze sometimes spoils the view.
The macaques
Wild monkeys live on the hill. They are used to visitors and known for grabbing plastic bags, drinks and sunglasses: do not feed them and keep your things zipped away.
The temple and the monument
Wat Khao Rang Samakkhitham and a monument to a former governor of the province stand on the hill; dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) in the temple.
Practical info
Tips
- Arrive about an hour before sunset: one guide says parking near the main terrace fills up fast after 5 pm. Keep food and drinks in a closed bag because of the monkeys. The hill roads are steep: on a scooter, ride carefully and do not go up in the rain. Combine the visit with Phuket Old Town (about 10 minutes by car) and the Big Buddha in the same half day. For a real sunset over the sea, see the best sunset spots. The information comes from travel guides, not an official site.
How to get there
In the north of Phuket Town, about 10 minutes by taxi or Grab from the centre. A paved road goes to the top; one source says there is no direct bus line. Scooter, rental car or taxi: see getting around Phuket.
