Thai Hua Museum Phuket: Chinese Community History, Hours and Admission
The Thai Hua Museum, in Phuket Old Town, occupies the former Thai Hua Chinese school, an elegant neoclassical building with light-coloured façades. It tells of the arrival of the Chinese in Phuket, the tin-mining era, the lives of merchant families and the history of the school itself. It is the best place to understand why Phuket Old Town has its Sino-Portuguese look, and a one-to-two-hour visit out of the heat.
Highlights

The former school building
The symmetrical façade, with its arcades and pediment, is one of the finest in the quarter. Photograph it from the courtyard before going in.

The façade dated 1934
The building bears the inscription “Phuket Thai Hua Museum” and the date 1934. The museum is on Krabi Road, a few minutes' walk from Thalang Road and the other old mansions; it combines easily with Chinpracha House.
The exhibition rooms
The rooms present Chinese immigration, work in the tin mines and the daily life of families of the past, with objects, photographs and explanatory panels. Skim the texts before choosing which rooms to linger in.
Practical info
Tips
- Prices found in several travel guides (not confirmed by an official website): around 200 THB for a foreign adult and 50 THB for a Thai adult, with reduced rates for children; an extra fee of around 200 THB is sometimes mentioned for a camera. Check at the ticket desk, as these amounts change. The closing day varies by source (Wednesday or Monday): call or check before you come. Many rooms are air-conditioned, which makes it a good idea in hot or rainy weather. For the rest of the quarter, see Phuket Old Town and the Phuket Town guide.
How to get there
The museum is at 28 Krabi Road, in Phuket Old Town. From the beaches take a taxi or ride-hailing app to Phuket Town; once in the old town everything is done on foot. See also getting around Phuket.
