Ton Sai Waterfall and Khao Phra Thaeo park: an easy hike and gibbons
Ton Sai Waterfall is in Khao Phra Thaeo park, the last large tropical forest on Phuket, in the north-east of the island near Thalang. You walk under the canopy, may spot monkeys and birds, and can visit the gibbon rehabilitation centre run by an association. It is an easy, cool nature outing, useful for a break from the beaches. Allow two to three hours.
Highlights

The Khao Phra Thaeo forest
A shaded path crosses the jungle to the waterfalls; the photo shows a corner of forest near the neighbouring Bang Pae waterfall, in the same park.

Bang Pae waterfall
In the east of the park, it is linked to Ton Sai by a trail (4 km according to one site, up to 8 km according to other sources).
The gibbon centre
An association reintroduces captive-bred white-handed gibbons into the forest there. It is not run by the park: the park entrance fee may not cover it.

Tips
- The Thai National Parks site, consulted in October 2026, gives 200 baht for a foreign adult and 100 baht for a child, with the right to see Ton Sai waterfall, and opening from 8 am to 5 pm every day. A recent review says the hiking trails were closed at times: check access before you come. The water flows best during and after the rainy season, and more weakly in the dry season. Do not feed the monkeys, wear shoes with grip and bring insect repellent. The gibbons are wild or rehabilitating animals: no contact. For another inland outing, see the Big Buddha of Phuket or Wat Chalong.
