Coconut Island (Koh Maphrao) in Phuket: How to Get There, What to Do and Who It Suits (2026 Guide)

Updated on October 25, 2026

Coconut Island, or Koh Maphrao, is a small, flat, quiet island east of Phuket, about 10 minutes by boat from Laem Hin pier, around ten kilometres from Phuket Town. It is a few-hours escape for doing nothing: beach, seaside lunch, kayaking in the mangroves. There is no hiking and no spectacular viewpoint. The longtail costs about 100 to 150 baht return per person according to guides; check the price on the spot.

Highlights

The longtail crossing

The longtail crossing

It takes 5 to 10 minutes depending on the source (the island is about 850 metres from the pier). The boats have no roof: wear sunscreen. On the way you pass floating restaurants.

Coconut Beach

This is the main activity, on the north of the island. The island is flat and peaceful: you come to relax for a few hours, not to hike.

Kayaking in the mangroves

A kayak outing around the mangroves is cited as an activity. Ask on the spot about hire.

Lunch by the sea

Several restaurants are cited, including Kabang on the waterfront and the LAKU beach club attached to a resort, where you can come without staying overnight.

Tips

  • Bring water and sunscreen; the boats have no roof. For bikes, one guide only mentions mountain bikes for resort guests: ask at the pier or your hotel. Boat times and prices change: confirm them with a local operator or your hotel. For clearer water and snorkelling, a speedboat excursion to Coral Island or Racha Island is better. If you are in the south-east of the island, see also Panwa beach. The information comes from travel guides and booking sites, not an official site.

How to get there

From Phuket Town, allow about twenty minutes by car to Laem Hin pier (about 8 km according to one guide, parking available), then a longtail or speedboat from the pier or from Royal Phuket Marina. See getting around Phuket.

Opening hours

Best: November to April, daytime
Boats during the day from Laem Hin pier (unofficial times; to confirm on the spot)
