The real cost
The scooter is 2 to 4 times cheaper per day, but add fuel, the deposit (500 to 2,000 baht according to one guide, to be checked) and the risk of a fine or a dispute. A car needs full insurance (a "Super CDW" or equivalent) and a full tank; weekly bookings are the cheapest. For the overall budget of your stay, see Phuket travel budget.
The licence: the real difference
According to the guides, you need your home-country licence for the vehicle category plus an international permit (1968 Vienna Convention) showing that category. A car-only international permit does not cover a scooter. Scooter shops do not always check, but the police run frequent checkpoints near Patong, Karon and Chalong, and insurance may refuse to pay after an accident if you are not in order. The scooter details are in renting a scooter in Phuket: prices, licence, helmet, scams. Fine amounts differ between sources and we found no official scale: check with the tourist police before you leave.
Safety and hill roads
The roads between Kata, Karon, Patong and Kamala are steep with tight bends, and become slippery in the rain. Scooter accidents are common among visitors. A car protects better, but driving on the left, motorbikes weaving through traffic and tuk-tuks stopping without warning demand attention. Never drive after drinking: checks apply to cars too.
Rain, heat and luggage
During the monsoon, between May and October according to the guides, sudden downpours make a scooter uncomfortable and dangerous; an air-conditioned car is safer. See also Phuket in the rain and best time to visit Phuket. With suitcases or children a car is the answer: a scooter carries only a backpack and one or two people.
Neither of the two
If you stay on one or two beaches, you do not need to drive. Grab, taxi, tuk-tuk, songthaew: see getting around Phuket. For the airport, a transfer booked in advance avoids haggling: from the airport to the beaches. For a full day around the island, a car with a driver is often simpler than a rental.
Where to compare cars
To rent a car, compare car rental offers in Phuket: take the full insurance, check the excess, and photograph the car at pick-up and return. For damage disputes, read scams and safety in Phuket.
Our advice by profile
- Family with children: car, or transfers and Grab.
- Couple exploring the southern beaches: car; scooter if both hold a motorcycle licence and are experienced.
- Solo traveller on a small budget with a motorcycle licence: scooter, with helmet and insurance in order.
- Short stay, a single beach: neither.
If you do not want to drive, stay near the beach and the restaurants: see where to stay in Phuket.
If you have an accident
On the spot: get to safety, switch on the hazard lights, check for injuries and call emergency services (191 (police), 1669 (ambulance), 1155 (tourist police)). Get a written police report on the spot: without it, the rental company and the insurer may refuse to pay. Photograph the vehicles, the plate, the road and the damage, note the other driver's details, and call the rental company before any repair.
Who pays what: damage to the car is covered by the rental company's protection (CDW), subject to its excess (deductible), or by an excess cover bought with the rental; injuries and medical costs fall under your travel insurance. Travel insurance does not pay for the rental car or for damage to third parties.
SafetyWing covers medical costs after an accident abroad; check the policy's conditions for driving (a licence valid in the country, a helmet on a scooter).
