What is known about the system

  • The sources I found (2018 to 2022) mention 19 warning towers, evacuation signs and regular drills, for example in Rawai in 2022. I found nothing more recent: check Thailand's National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC).
  • After a 2018 review, evacuation signs were to be checked; many dated from 2005. Routes for Patong, Kamala, Kata and Karon were revised.
  • In 2018, a warning buoy was reported out of order and some towers found faulty; authorities later said all 19 towers worked.
  • A 2022 article says the system does not trigger automatically below magnitude 7.8 and can be activated manually.

What to do

  1. When booking or on arrival, spot the evacuation signs and the direction of high ground from your hotel.
  2. If a strong earthquake lasts or the sirens sound, move away from the beach and go uphill or inland, on foot if roads are blocked.
  3. Do not go back to the beach to watch the sea withdraw.
  4. Follow the authorities' instructions; do not rely on social media rumours.
  5. Keep your passport, charged phone and travel insurance at hand; see travel insurance for Phuket.
