Weather and sea in April

  • Temperatures: up to 34 to 35 °C in the afternoon, warm nights, heavy air.
  • Rain: more frequent than in March, as late-day storms rather than all-day rain.
  • Sea: calm and warm early in the month; it can pick up towards the end, with red flags more frequent. Check the flags before swimming.
  • Sun: very high UV index, reef-friendly sunscreen and a shade break between 11:00 and 15:00.

Songkran, 13 to 15 April

Songkran is a national holiday: people soak each other in the street with water guns and buckets, above all in Patong, Kata and Karon, and in Phuket Town. To join in: phone in a waterproof pouch, quick-drying clothes, glasses. To avoid it: stay at the beach or on a tour in the morning, and do not ride a scooter on those days (slippery road, projectiles). Some shops and services close; hotels and transfers should be booked early. The dates are fixed (13, 14, 15 April), but each area announces its programme late: check on the spot.

Tours and beaches in April

The Similan Islands stay open until about mid-May: see Similan from Phuket. The most-booked outing remains Maya, Phi Phi and Bamboo with buffet (about 42 USD, rated 4.6 from more than 21,000 reviews on GetYourGuide in October 2026), detailed in Phi Phi from Phuket. Leave early, before the heat and the afternoon storms. For something less exposed, pick a sunset cruise.

Prices and planning

Hotel rates fall, except around Songkran. For costs see the budget guide; if a storm hits, Phuket when it rains.
