Weather and sea in January
- Weather: dry season, with sunshine most days. A brief shower is still possible, but rain is rare compared with summer. Records vary by source: check the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) forecast a few days before departure rather than relying on an average.
- Temperatures: around 30 to 32 °C by day, about 24 to 25 °C at night, with air less heavy than in April or May. The sea stays at about 28 °C.
- Sea: generally calm and clear on the west coast (Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala), so swimming is possible almost everywhere. A windy day can raise waves on a particular beach: the lifeguards' red flags are the rule.
- Sun: it is strong even under a hazy sky. Coral-friendly sunscreen, a hat and water are useful for every outing.
To compare with the rest of the year, see our guide to the best time to visit Phuket; for the previous month, Phuket in December; for the end-of-year holidays, Christmas and New Year in Phuket.
Crowds and prices: high season
January is, with December, the most in-demand month of the year. The beaches of Patong and Kata are lively, restaurants are full in the evening and hotel rates are higher than in low season. The first half, an extension of the holidays, is generally the busiest; the second is a little calmer.
- Accommodation: book early, especially on the seafront; to choose an area, see where to stay in Phuket.
- Budget: allow a high-season margin, see the Phuket travel budget.
- Quiet beach: favour early morning, or beaches less built-up than Patong.
The Similan Islands: January is their best time
The Similan National Park is open every year from mid-October to mid-May (2026-2027 season: 15 October 2026 to 15 May 2027, dates set by the park). January falls right in the middle: calm sea, good visibility, an ideal period for snorkelling.
Daily visitor numbers are limited and weekends fill up fast: book several days ahead. The entry fee (about 500 THB per adult according to our Similan Islands page) is either included or payable on the spot depending on the operator. The options are detailed in Similan from Phuket: which tour to choose. The premium speed catamaran tour was rated 4.4 from 88 reviews there in October 2026; check the price and availability for your date on the page.
Allow a very long day (road then boat on the way out and back) and a very early start.
Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island
Phang Nga Bay can be visited all year, and January is a good time: calm sea, clear sky, cliffs and mangroves easy to make out. The James Bond Island speedboat tour with canoeing is the simplest day outing if the Similan Islands are too far for you. The options are detailed in Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island: which tour.
Even in January, the best-known sites are very busy in the middle of the day: an early departure or a small group changes the visit.
What to do depending on the weather
- Good weather (most days): beach in the morning, a full-day island or bay tour, sunset from the south of the island. For the nearer islands, see Phi Phi from Phuket.
- Wind or rougher sea on a given day: choose a land activity (old town, temples, food, massage) or a sheltered beach. If the weather turns, see Phuket when it rains.
- Evening: Patong is the liveliest area, see the Patong guide.
What to pack
- Sunscreen (coral-friendly), hat, sunglasses, towel.
- A light long-sleeved layer for the boat and the air conditioning.
- Seasickness medication if you are susceptible.
- Cash for small purchases and, depending on the offer, the park entry fee.
