Book your accommodation first

  • Most expensive period: roughly 20 December to early January, according to the guides we read, about 30 to 50% above the rest of the high season. Some luxury hotels go even higher; always compare the same dates.
  • Minimum stay: many hotels require 3 to 4 nights (sometimes 5) around 31 December and Christmas.
  • When to book: guides advise at least 3 months ahead. In October it is already late for the best addresses: if you are flexible, stay in Kata or Karon rather than Patong.
  • Which area: see where to stay in Phuket; Patong is lively on New Year's Eve, Kata and Karon stay calmer.

The nightly rate depends mostly on the date and the hotel: see the Phuket travel budget for the rest of your spending.

31 December: where to celebrate New Year

Bangla Road, Patong

  • Patong countdown: a free show on the sand. According to a guide consulted in October 2026, it usually runs for three evenings before the 31st, with Thai bands each night and a big firework display at midnight on the last night. No official 2026 programme was published: confirm the dates when you arrive. See Patong Beach and the Patong guide.
  • Bangla Road: Patong's main nightlife street is packed as midnight approaches; the clubs hold their own parties.
  • Hotel gala dinners: several hotels in Kamala and Patong hold a gala dinner on 31 December, often with fireworks. As an indication, the Hyatt Regency in Kamala listed 8,890 THB per person (food and alcohol) for a recent edition; ask the hotel for 2026 rates.
  • Ticketed party in Kata: Kata Rocks announces a countdown party on Thursday 31 December 2026 from 22:30, with a premium package at 4,950 THB net per person.
  • Central Phuket countdown: a big countdown with midnight fireworks is described at the Phuket Outdoor Arena, with no confirmed 2026 dates. See Central Phuket.

Traffic: on the west coast, roads are gridlocked from about 22:00 to 01:00. Plan to walk home or sleep nearby rather than count on a taxi at midnight. For staying safe that night, see scams and safety in Phuket.

Christmas in Phuket

Christmas is not a local holiday in Thailand: 25 December is an ordinary day for Thais, but hotels and big shopping malls decorate and serve festive meals. Book your hotel's Christmas dinner ahead, as for the 31st. For a day away from the beach, see Central Phuket or the list of things to do when it rains, useful if a shower passes.

Weather and sea at Christmas

According to the sources we read, December has roughly 6 to 8 rainy days, often short showers of 15 to 30 minutes, with 31 to 32 °C by day, 23 to 24 °C at night and a sea at around 28 °C. This is when swimming and boat trips cause the fewest problems: see the best time to visit Phuket and our guide to Phuket in December.

Boats leave every day in high season, but they are fuller than usual between Christmas and New Year: book a few days ahead.

If you plan to stay on for the start of the year, Phuket in January covers the rest of your trip.
