Beach hotel: the simple solution
Without a car, a hotel a few steps from the beach saves taxis. In Patong, Kata or Karon, restaurants are within walking distance; see our Patong guide and the Kata and Karon guide. Check the "distance to beach" shown on the listing and read recent reviews about noise.
Resort: comfort, with one caveat
The big west-coast resorts bundle pools, restaurants and activities. Beware "near the beach": some sit on a hill or around a lagoon and rely on a shuttle. For instance, according to the hotels' own sites, Pavilions Phuket is about 1.2 km from Layan beach and Banyan Tree Phuket sits on the Laguna lagoon with a shuttle. Ask for shuttle times before booking. For the big-resort area, see Bang Tao and Laguna and where to stay in Bang Tao.
Villa: space, but law and logistics
A pool villa makes sense from four people or for a week or more. Two caveats. First, many are far from beaches and restaurants: plan for a driver, Grab rides or a rental car. Second, Thailand's Hotel Act (2004) governs rentals of under 30 days, and legal sources report stricter checks on listings: favour a professionally managed villa with a clear Booking listing, and keep your confirmation.
Guesthouse or boutique hotel: the town

For low prices and life, Phuket Old Town offers cafés, markets and Sino-Portuguese houses, but the sea is about half an hour away by road. Good for a cultural stay, less for swimming.
Four checks before you pay
- Real distance to the sea and any hill to climb on foot.
- Shuttle: routes, times, whether it is free.
- Free cancellation: shown on the Booking listing; the deadline matters.
- Season: from May to October the west beaches have more swell; see the best time to visit.

FAQ
Resort or hotel: what is the difference?
A resort generally groups several restaurants, pools and activities on a large site; a hotel is smaller and simpler. Either can be on the beach or not.
Do you need a rental car if you stay in a villa?
Often yes, or a driver: many villas are far from beaches and restaurants. See getting around Phuket.
Can you book a villa for three nights?
Rentals of under 30 days fall under the Hotel Act: the villa must be registered as tourist accommodation. Book through a platform and keep the confirmation; ask the host if in doubt.
When should you book for December to February?
It is high season: book early and choose free cancellation.
