The four temples compared
| Temple | Why go | Time | Hours given |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wat Chalong | The island's most revered temple, great pagoda, worshippers | 1 h | About 7am-5pm (some guides say 8am) |
| Big Buddha | About 45 m statue, views of Chalong and Kata | 1 h | About 9am-6pm since the March 2026 reopening; older guides say 6am-7pm |
| Wat Phra Thong | Golden Buddha buried in the ground, only head and chest showing | 30 min | About 8am-5:30pm per one guide |
| Chinese shrines: Jui Tui, Bang Neow | Hokkien Taoism, colour, incense; centre of the Vegetarian Festival | 20-30 min each | Daytime, no official hours |
The Big Buddha was closed after a landslide in 2024; one guide reports it reopened in March 2026. Check it is open on the day before paying a driver.
Which to pick for your time
- Half a day: Wat Chalong in the morning, Big Buddha next (15 minutes by road), seafood lunch in Rawai.
- A day with the town: add the old town and the Chinese shrines in the afternoon, on foot.
- Off the tourist trail: Wat Phra Thong and Wat Phra Nang Sang in the north, with the Thalang museum.
- In October: the Vegetarian Festival makes the Chinese shrines the year's highlight, but very noisy.
Guided tour or on your own?
On your own, with Grab or a scooter, the temples are easy. A guided tour adds context (who the two monks of Chalong were, the town's history) and transport: the guided Wat Chalong, Karon viewpoint and old town tour is the simplest half-day option. For a driver by the day, see getting around.
Dress and rules
Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off before the halls, never point your feet at statues, women should not touch monks. The firecrackers at Chalong are loud for children.
