What you see

How a pearl is made

Operators explain three types: Mabe (a bead is placed in an oyster of about 13 cm, then 14 months of growth), Akoya (oysters of 5 to 10 cm, 8 to 24 months on the farm) and South Sea pearls (Pinctada maxima, 2 to 3 years after seeding). This is the most interesting part of the visit.

Buying pearls without being fooled

  • Ask the pearl type (cultured or imitation), the size and the quality, and get a written certificate for any serious purchase.
  • Compare with another shop before buying: the tour always ends in the shop, and the sources read give no posted prices.
  • Do not let anyone rush you, and ask about returns and refunds before you pay.
  • Cheap tours often include a shop stop: read what is included.

Pairing it with a half day in Phuket

The farm pairs well with a city outing: see the Big Buddha and the Old Town. For more ideas, read things to do in Phuket.
