Phuket or Samui in six lines

These are general seasonal patterns: weather varies each year, so check the forecast close to your dates.

Beaches

Phuket has a beach for every mood: busy Patong, family-friendly Kata and Karon, quiet Nai Harn, sunset-facing Kamala. Samui's beaches are less varied but easy to like: Chaweng is lively, Lamai a little calmer, and the north and west coasts are the quietest. Swimming conditions depend on the season on both islands, so read the flag colours.

Nightlife, food and budget

Phuket offers more of everything, from Bangla Road to beach clubs and fine dining, and more choice at every price. Samui is smaller, with a livelier evening scene concentrated in Chaweng and a calmer one elsewhere. Prices are in the same range for comparable hotels; Phuket's wider choice makes it easier to find a low-cost room.

Getting there

Phuket is much simpler: Phuket airport receives flights from across Asia and beyond. For Samui you usually fly via Bangkok or take a ferry from the mainland. If you want both islands, read Phuket to Koh Samui: there is no direct ferry, but a direct flight of about an hour exists.

Who should choose what

  • First trip, first-timers, short stay, lots of activities: Phuket. To plan the days see Phuket in 3 days, or book a day trip such as Phi Phi and Maya Bay.
  • Couples after calm, longer stay, travelling in January to September: Koh Samui.
  • Travelling in October to December: Phuket is usually the safer bet.
  • Families: both work; Phuket has more family resorts, see family resorts with kids' clubs.

FAQ

Which is better, Phuket or Koh Samui?

Phuket for variety and easy access, Samui for a smaller, calmer island. The right month matters more than the island.

When is Samui rainy?

Mainly from October to December, when Phuket is at the end of its own rainy season.

Can I visit both?

Yes: fly directly in about an hour or go overland by bus and ferry via Surat Thani. Allow two nights or more on each island.
