Flying: Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang
Flights reach Phuket airport from both Bangkok airports. Full-service airlines mostly use Suvarnabhumi (BKK); low-cost carriers mostly use Don Mueang (DMK). If you arrive in Bangkok on an international flight and continue the same day, book the domestic leg from the same airport, with a long margin if you have to change airports. From Phuket airport, read Phuket airport and the beaches to choose between the minibus, taxi and private transfer. A private car and van from the airport is bookable here on GetYourGuide.
By bus
Buses to Phuket leave from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai). Overnight VIP coaches with reclining seats are the usual choice; they arrive at Phuket bus station, a few kilometres from the old town and well away from the west-coast beaches, so budget for a taxi or songthaew on arrival. Traffic leaving Bangkok and in the south can add hours.
By train and bus
There is no railway line to Phuket. The train runs south to Surat Thani (Phun Phin), and you finish by bus or minibus across the peninsula. Check which Bangkok station your train leaves from on the State Railway of Thailand site, since long-distance services have been moving between stations. The sleeper is comfortable, but the saving over a flight is small once you add the bus and a day of your time.
Which to choose
- Short stay or travelling with children: fly.
- Tight budget and no hurry: overnight bus.
- Slow travel: train to Surat Thani, possibly with a stop at Khao Sok or Khao Lak on the way. See Khao Lak from Phuket for that coast.
- Going on to the islands afterwards: Phuket to Koh Samui and the return trip, Phuket to Bangkok.
