Phuket to Bangkok: the comparison

Prices and durations vary with the season and the source: check on the date of your trip.

The plane: which airport to choose in Bangkok

Flights leave Phuket airport for two Bangkok airports. Low-cost airlines (Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Vietjet) mostly use Don Mueang (DMK), the smaller one, sometimes further from your hotel; Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways use Suvarnabhumi (BKK). If you connect to an international flight, stay at the same airport to avoid a transfer between the two. For Phuket airport and the trip to the beaches, read Phuket airport and the beaches.

Night bus and train

The night bus leaves from Phuket bus station and arrives at Bangkok's Southern Terminal (Sai Tai Mai): allow 12 to over 20 hours depending on traffic. There is no direct train: some travellers combine a bus to Surat Thani (Phun Phin) with a sleeper train to Bangkok, for a total journey of 13 to 19 hours. It is cheaper than flying only if you do not count your time.

Private or hired car

The road is about 850 km: a whole day of driving. It is not recommended solo. For trips on the island, see car hire at Phuket airport and getting around Phuket.

When to go
