Khao Lak from Phuket: the comparison

Where to sleep for this itinerary. Stay in Karon: it is the most practical area for leaving in the morning and getting back in the evening. Compare hotels with free cancellation in Karon and see our where-to-stay guide (Phuket) to pick the neighbourhood.

Day trip: what works

The Similan Islands are the flagship outing from Khao Lak: the season runs only from about mid-October to mid-May (2026-2027: 15 October 2026 to 15 May 2027), see Similan from Phuket. If you stay in Phuket, the road takes time; if you sleep in Khao Lak, it almost disappears. The ride to the pier is in shared minibuses: the start is very early.

Private road and overnight stay

The road crosses the Sarasin Bridge then follows the coast north. To combine Phuket and Khao Lak without heavy luggage at each stage, a private driver is simplest; see getting around Phuket. A night in Khao Lak saves a three-hour round trip the same day: compare the two areas in Phuket or Khao Lak.

Worth seeing around Khao Lak

  • 2004 tsunami memorial at Ban Nam Khem: a stranded police boat and a museum (check hours on the spot).
  • Khao Sok park and Cheow Lan lake, about an hour further: see Khao Sok from Phuket.
  • Beaches of Bang Niang, Nang Thong and Khuk Khak: wide, calmer than Patong.

When to go
