Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi: 1,260 steps, entrance fee, opening hours and tips (2026)
Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) is a Buddhist temple in the jungle near Krabi Town, famous for its staircase of more than 1,200 steps up to a Buddha statue at the summit with a 360-degree view. Most sources count 1,237 steps; a sign at the bottom is said to read 1,260 since an extension. Entry is free according to most sources; only one mentions 50 baht in 2025, and a donation of about 40 baht is asked at the cave: confirm on arrival. Allow 2 to 3 hours round trip. Opening hours differ, from 5 or 6 am to 5 or 6 pm depending on the source.
Highlights

The summit and its view
At the very top, a Buddha and a small shrine overlook the Krabi plain and, on a clear day, the karst islands. It is the reward for the climb.
The steps
The staircase is steep, without shade near the end, and uneven in places. Monkeys are common along the way; do not feed them.
The cave at the foot of the mountain
The temple is built around caves, with statues and meditation spots; this is where the voluntary donation is asked.

Tips
- Start early (before 8 am) to avoid the heat: the climb usually takes 45 to 75 minutes depending on fitness. Bring 1.5 litres of water per person and wear shoes with grip; the stone is slippery after rain. Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off inside buildings. Many travellers combine the temple with the hot springs and the Emerald Pool in a day trip from Ao Nang or Krabi: park entry fees are often extra (Emerald Pool about 400 baht, hot springs about 200 baht according to one listing), so check what the price includes. From Phuket it is a long day: see Krabi from Phuket. For a quiet beach after the effort, Railay or Ao Nang. The information comes from travel guides, not an official site.
How to get there
About 10 km north of Krabi Town and 20 to 30 minutes by car from Ao Nang. Taxi, Grab or songthaew from Ao Nang; or an organised tour with hotel transfer. From Phuket, allow about 2.5 to 3 hours on the road to Krabi, so it is a long day.
