Hong Island from Phuket: the comparison

Where to sleep for this itinerary. Stay in Karon: it is the most practical area for leaving in the morning and getting back in the evening. Compare hotels with free cancellation in Karon and see our where-to-stay guide (Phuket) to pick the neighbourhood.

Group tour: what to expect

Early start from the hotel, minibus to the Phang Nga pier, then a boat to Koh Panyi, Ko Tapu (James Bond Island) and the Hong lagoon, sometimes by canoe. Allow a full day. The sites are very busy in the middle of the day: the morning departure is better. More in Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island.

The Hong lagoon: conditions

Canoe access to the lagoon depends on the tide: the operator adapts the programme, and some stops may be dropped if the water is high or rough. Snorkelling is not the strong point of these sites, especially when the water is cloudy. For real snorkelling, see the snorkelling comparison.

Private boat: when it is worth it

A private longtail costs much more per person but avoids the crowd and follows your pace. It leaves from the island: combine it with Koh Yao Noi and a night there.

When to go

November to April for the calmest sea; in the monsoon, trips can be cancelled or shortened. See the best time to visit Phuket.
