Racha by boat: two dives
What you do. Free pick-up from Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata or Chalong (extra charge for other areas), crossing to Racha Yai and Racha Noi, a briefing, then two discover dives with equipment, breakfast and lunch. GoPro footage costs extra.
Good to know. It is a day of about 8 hours. Monsoon seas (May to October) can cancel or postpone the trip: ask about rebooking terms. For the islands themselves, see our Racha Island page.
Worth it? Yes if diving is the point of your day: the reefs are more varied than from a beach, and two dives give you time to relax.
Kata Beach shore dive
What you do. A half day with no boat: explanations, equipment fitting, then you walk into the water from the beach. Instruction is in English and Thai, in a small group.
Good to know. The minimum age shown is 10, and a medical questionnaire must be completed before diving. Other schools say this kind of beach dive runs only in the dry season (about January to April): check the offer's availability dates.
Worth it? Yes to try it without spending a day on a boat, with teenagers, or before deciding to get certified. The reefs are less rich than at Racha.
Before you dive
- Flying: wait before boarding a plane after a dive. Most offers state 18 hours, one states 12: follow your operator's rule and dive early in your stay.
- Health: a medical questionnaire is required; with a cold, asthma or a heart condition, ask for advice before booking.
- No-tank alternative: snorkeling is enough to see the fish, for example on a trip to the Similan Islands (in season, mid-October to mid-May).
